Clumping Bamboo

Clumpers grow gradually outward from the center with new canes growing taller and getting larger in diameter every year. The most important characteristic of clump bamboos is that, unlike running bamboos, they do not spread by sending underground shoots far away from the main plant. A clumping variety of bamboo is a safe and attractive plant to add to any landscape. It is NOT invasive. For a privacy hedge, plant clumping bamboos anywhere from 4- to 10-feet apart.

  5. i am on two wooded acres and back to a major highway in nj i am looking for a fast growing bamboo how long would this take to grow 12 feet high and how fast and far does it spread.

    1. You can have 12 tall running bamboo plants in just one year but having them fill in to make a solid wall will take longer, about 3 years if planted 6 to 8 feet apart. To create a solid wall of running bamboo sooner, plant the individual plants closer together. Unlike clumping bamboo, which should not be planted closer than 4 feet apart, running bamboos can be planted as close together as you like. If plants are set in the ground 1 to 2 feet apart, you can create an almost immediate screen from the highway that will only get thicker and taller over time.

  7. what is the bamboo that grows quickly in a matter of days? how and when should I make appt to come visit, are you available this coming weekend?

    1. Nana,
Most of the bamboo will grow very quickly during the growing season. This is typically from the end of April, beginning of May all the way to November. This will change depending on the variety and weather.
We will be happy to show you different varieties and talk about the growing patterns on Saturday. We are open from 8-4 Monday-Saturday. We will be closed New Year's Day and Sunday. Please give us a call at (352)429-2425 if you would like to set up a specific time.

    1. Thank you, Jennifer, for your kind comments. We try hard to provide information in an easy-to-understand way. There is so much to learn about bamboo - it is different from other plants in many ways - and it's always good to know our efforts are appreaciated. :)

    2. Hi Joni - so glad you're enjoying our site! The red bamboo turns a dark red during cool weather. Here in Central Florida where it doesn't get very cold, the red is paler than it would be in colder parts of the country. Unfortunately, once cut, the red color will fade as the canes dry unless you coat the canes with a wood preservative to lock the color in. The only bamboo that will hold its color when dry is black bamboo.

  10. HI - I'm enjoying your beautiful bamboo site - I live in clement Brittany, France, and have a large swathe of runnng bamboo in my garden, having to kick weed the shoots as they come up to avoid them spreading too far. the clump is now pretty dense (become more so over the last 15 years) and is about 30 feet wide by around 40 feet dep, and the bamboos plants ( all thicknesses from 3" to 5" or more) are up to 0/70 feet tall.
I am worred that they may be a nuisance for my neighbours - who are very long sufferng - and I want to cut a pathway through to access the rest of my garden (5000+ sq feet) so how do you suggest I deal with them? At present we cut or stamp on those close to my neighbours but let other shoots grow/ they are hard to dig up as the roots are tough and all connected. it seems heartless and ugly just to saw across at an above ground level - and leaves the root in the ground. The garden is all organic and I don't use chemicals, either fertiliser or weedkller/ pesticide. there is a carpet of leaves that mulches the plants.
I once let some go to someone who had a van and just dug up his own. Should I sell them piecemeal?
Glad to read all replies or inbox me crystaljaneboyd@gmail.com

    1. With the running bamboo, the best way to control it is with a rhizome barrier. This is a thick plastic sheet installed in a trench. You can install on the side that is encroaching on the neighbors and leave your side open. Leave at least 2" above the ground to catch any runners that try to escape. We do not offer international shipping, but you may research this online and find someone who can ship to you.

  11. What a wonderful experience from the time we drove into the nursery, the professionalism , the education and knowledge from the staff , to loading up and getting home to plant the clumping bamboo we purchased .
We love the 2 different bamboos we decided on, they look great in the yard , and we are excited to watch them grow .
Just wish we had more space for more bamboo

    Thanks Jennifer, Drew, & Ryan

  13. Hello, We are wanting to use bamboo as a wall to hide our neighbors home. There is one section between our foundation and brick wall of 3.5 feet wide by 8 feet. The rest of the length we want to cover is approx 50 feet. We need it to be at least 40 feet tall. Do I need to be concerned of the roots by the foundation since there is only 3.5 feet of space in that 8 foot section? Also, which bamboo do you recommend for the height of 40 feet.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Barbara, The Emerald Timber will provide the height you are looking for, but you would need to do a bit of work to keep it to the 3.5' depth. This should only need some mild trimming, as long as you keep an eye on it. The roots should not pose any issues to the foundation. In the other area with a wider planting depth, the Emerald will do a nice job of growing to around 35-40' tall and providing the wall you are wanting to create. For more info or questions, shoot us an email at jennifer@beautifulbamboo.com, and we'll be happy to help you further.

  14. Hello, do you recommend installing a bamboo barrier for clumping varieties?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No, we do not recommend installing a rhizome barrier for a clumping bamboo. It is not necessary. For more information, please contact us at the nursery jennifer@beautifulbamboo.com or 352-429-2425.

  18. So far I have gotten 10 plants from this nursery. Every plant was an excellent specimens and have exceeded my growth expectations over the last 2 years. The plants were very healthy and well cared for. I would recommend them to anyone looking for great bamboo. Plus the nursery has many varieties planted that are 5+ years old so you can see what it will eventually look like. This really helps the decision process.
